Truffle Hunting in Motovun Forest: A Beginner's Guide
Motovun Forest, located in the heart of Istria in northwestern Croatia, hides one of the most valuable gastronomic treasures of this region – truffles. This ancient forest, stretching along the Mirna River, has been renowned for centuries for the excellence of its truffles.
What are truffles and why are they so valuable?
Truffles are edible fungi that grow underground in symbiosis with the roots of certain tree species, especially oak, hazelnut, and pine. Their unique aroma and rarity make them one of the most prized culinary ingredients in the world.
Motovun Forest is home to two types of truffles: white truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico), which is considered the king of all truffles and is most highly valued, and black truffle (Tuber melanosporum), which is somewhat more accessible but still of exceptional quality.
What does truffle hunting look like?
Truffle hunting in Motovun Forest is an experience that combines tradition, nature, and gastronomy. Our professional truffle hunters guide you through the mystical paths of the forest, together with their specially trained dogs.
Dogs are indispensable in truffle hunting – their exceptional sense of smell allows them to discover truffles buried up to 30 centimeters underground. Our dogs, like Max and Bella, undergo annual specialized training to develop this remarkable instinct.
"When a dog digs into the earth and discovers that treasure hidden in the soil, it's a moment of pure magic. That aroma, that joy in the dog's eyes – it's something you can't describe in words." — Ivan Truffle Hunter, Tartufi Istra
