Truffle Hunting Dogs: The Heroes Behind Every Hunt
When you think of truffle hunting, you probably imagine a person in the forest with a basket. But the true star of every tour is our dogs – specially trained four-legged partners without whom this work would simply not be possible.
Why dogs, not humans?
Truffles grow 10-30 centimeters underground, hidden beneath the surface. The human nose simply isn't designed to detect these underground treasures. But dogs? Their sense of smell is an incredible 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than humans!
Especially suitable breeds include Lagotto Romagnolo (Italian water dog), but mixed breeds with pronounced hunting instincts can also become excellent truffle hunters.
Our dogs – heroes behind every tour
Each of our truffle hunters has their own dog, but they all work as a team. Here are our stars:
Max
Our most experienced dog. With 8 years of work, Max has found over 500 truffles. Known for his gentleness with children – you often see him playing with the youngest guests before the tour.
Bella
Max's "student". At 3 years old, Bella has already impressed guests with her precision. She has a special instinct for white truffles – they say she can "smell" the difference.
Rex
Our fastest searcher. Rex doesn't like waiting – the moment he smells a truffle, he goes straight for it. Great for groups who want to see more findings.
Luna
Our youngest hope. At only one year old, Luna is already showing exceptional talent. Truffle hunters say she'll one day surpass all the others.
What does truffle dog training look like?
Training dogs for truffle hunting begins in early childhood. Puppies are gradually introduced to the truffle smell – first through play with truffles hidden in watermelons or eggs, then through more complex tasks.
The process includes:
- Early acquaintance with the smell – puppies learn to recognize the unique aroma of truffles
- Play as motivation – instead of food, we use play as a reward
- Olfactory stimulation – exercises for developing concentration and endurance
- Forest work – real tours with experienced truffle hunters
- Socialization – dogs learn to work with guests and other dogs
"A truffle dog is not just a working tool – it's a partner. A relationship of trust is built that lasts a lifetime. When Max looks into my eyes and says 'let's go find', I know it will be a good day." — Ivan Truffle Hunter, Tartufi Istra
What can you expect from the dogs during the tour?
During our truffle hunting tour, dogs will:
- Lead you through the forest with exceptional certainty
- Show excitement when they smell a truffle (don't worry – they don't dig until the truffle hunter gives the signal)
- Communicate with the truffle hunter through special signals
- Allow you to participate in finding and digging up truffles
